Yankees All-Star SP Nestor Cortes expected to be placed on IL with groin injury

The New York Yankees‘ injury woes continue.

With the likes of Giancarlo Stanton, Matt Carpenter, Clay Holmes and Luis Severino (among a host of others) already on the injured list, breakout All-Star starting pitcher Nestor Cortes is expected to join the group, according to Lindsey Adler of The Athletic. Holmes — like Cortes — was a first-time All-Star this summer, while Stanton was voted into his fifth midsummer classic.

“Nasty Nestor” is 9-4 with a team-best 0.96 WHIP and leads the starting rotation in ERA (2.68). The lefty has recorded 133 strikeouts over 131 innings pitched in 23 starts as well.

According to Adler, Holmes is expected to be activated off of the IL at some point on the Yankees 10-game road trip, which begins on Thursday night against the Oakland Athletics.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman provided a bit more insight on the injury with a hint of optimism.
